Insight Garden Program

ABOUT US

Mission

IGP’s mission is to facilitate an innovative curriculum combined with vocational gardening and landscaping training so that people in prison can reconnect to self, community, and the natural world. This “inner” and “outer” gardening approach transforms lives, ends ongoing cycles of incarceration, and creates safer communities.

History

In 2002, IGP was founded in collaboration with the Insight Prison Project at San Quentin State Prison. Two years later, as a primarily volunteer organization, it became fiscally sponsored through the Agape Foundation and later the Peace Development Fund. With start-up funding in 2014, IGP received its 501(c)3 non-profit status and also expanded to California State Prison-Solano (CSP-SOL). Over the past year, the program has grown significantly as it plans for statewide and national replication. In 2015-16, IGP will expand within San Quentin to a higher security level as well as California Medical Facility- Solano (CMF-SOL), and California State Prison- Los Angeles County (CSP-LAC).
